About the event

THREAD REPUBLIC CIC presents their 2025 Exhibition: TEXTILE CITIZENS: BEYOND CONSUMERISM

With global textile production reaching epic volumes, the significant devastation to people and our planet is now clear to see. A growth mindset for consumerism works only for the billionaire bank balances for those at the top of the business tree. No benefit trickles down, it only gushes up.

In this system, customers are always encouraged to buy more: Viewed only as passive consumers and discarders of product, ever ready to line the pockets of the wealthy with more money, for More Stuff.

How does this system change? Well, it's not going to change itself. We need policy & regulation (it's coming slowly), but we always forget a key, ESSENTIAL part of the system...US! If the consumer mindset changes, the whole system changes.

TEXTILE CITIZENS explores how, when we view ourselves as citizens not consumers, we open up a whole other system of textile engagement, acquisition and ownership that is based on creativity, care, community and joy.
