Discover the exciting world of Free Machine Embroidery - an exciting introduction to drawing with your sewing machine

Time & Location

29 Jun 2024, 13:00 – 16:00

Thread Republic, The Piazza Centre, Unit 42-44 Princess Alexandra Walk, Huddersfield HD1 2RS, UK

About the event

An exciting introduction to drawing with your sewing machine using free machine embroidery. You’ll create a series of wonderful linear compositions and have the confidence to continue creating.

You'll learn how to adapt you machine to act like your pencil, to use threads as varying weights of graphite. We will be looking at illustrating different scenes from holiday destinations, so you can expect to create a series of samples and a couple of finished, stitched illustrations, which you may wish to mount and frame as a memento of your workshop. We’ll work on calico and let the thread take centre stage.

Skill Level: This workshop is intended for beginners and those who wish to build their confidence before moving onto a more advanced session.

You'll need: Please bring your own sewing machine [cleaned and in good working order] with straight stitch foot and free motion embroidery foot [essential] - if there isn’t a specific model for your machine opt for a universal free motion/darning foot. Plus a couple of holiday pictures of landscapes &/or buildings rather than people.

We'll provide: fabric, threads and all other requirements. But if there’s some specific you wish to work with then please bring it along.

Led by: Textile Artist, Dionne Swift.

Dionne Swift Studied at Goldsmith’s College, London University [BA Textiles], receiving a Masters in Textiles from UCE with a collection of teaching qualifications. She has 34 years experience as a tutor and teaches and exhibits all over the world.  Dionne will help you start your journey into machine embroidery…giving you the techniques and tips you need to get started and then the confidence to follow your own path.
